We have arrived in South America!!! This is the start of our 4-month journey from Ecuador to Patagonia. Quito is 9,350 feet high, so we wanted to give ourselves time to acclimate. All that time in Tahoe must have served us well, as no one feels the altitude. Quito is the second highest capital in the world, after La Paz, Bolivia.
Our introduction to the city was with on a walking tour which took us through the Central Market where we learned about herbal medicine and local fruit.
Dashiell's opinion: The fruit is too sour.
The crown jewel of Quito is the Basilica.
For our travels, we bought a car - officially making this an "overlanding" adventure. This will be our home for the next few months. It's no easy feat buying a car in a foreign country and officially transferring ownership, while also transferring money without the car in hand. The car was in Ipiales, Colombia - so, Jonah and Imogen made the 6-hour journey to the border of Colombia by bus, while Dashiell and I straddled two hemispheres at the Mitad del Mundo.

There are all kinds of fun science experiments one can do at the equator line. Dashiell tried to balance an egg on a nail head (I did it successfully!) and walk on the equator line without looking (harder than it looks).

Obligatory equator line photos with my boys!
